about

A single track release that pays tribute to the feature-length documentary ‘Gardening with Soul’ directed by Jess Feast. An intimate portrait of a green-fingered nun, the movie premiered at the New Zealand International Film Festival in July 2013, and won Best Documentary at the 2013 Moa (NZ Film) Awards.

Garden of Soul
© Helen Dorothy (2013)

Sister Loyola has fingers that are green
And eyes that twinkle on the wide movie screen
In the Home of Compassion, her life has been
Helping others with less than her own simple needs
The camera is close behind as she enters the potting shed
Where tiny seedlings she will nourish, nurture and protect
“The best start in life is the chance to get ahead
In your Garden of Soul.”

Sister Loyola has a heart that is gold
She opens it up to the young and the old
On the Common Ground, she gathers up the fold
And she shows them how to be gardeners with soul
Blue stars of borage and the fragrant lemon balm
The honey-bees will thank you, plus they give the garden charm
And learn to deal with pests with the least amount of harm
In your Garden of Soul

Frost on the rosehips, she lets the garden sleep
And fallen leaves from the path she will sweep
She’s down making compost, her ‘club-sandwich’ heap
With the leaves, and horse manure and seaweed from the beach
“Be kind to your worms, give them a lovely home
They’ll be your soils’ blood; they’ll be your soils’ bone
Plant sunflowers in between the rows of corn
For they won’t stand up alone
Plant sunflowers in between the rows of corn
In your Garden of Soul
